Phisher

What is a Phisher?

A phisher is a cyber criminal that steals your identity. It hacks into your personal accounts and look for information like your back account name and password.

How did I get infected?

Phishers can pose as a bank staff requesting that you send your password to the bank.

They’re commonly passed around through email of instant messaging. They would send messages to you telling you to go to a fake website.

Fake websites can be identified from their ending extensions. A .com, .net, or .org is fine. However, a website ending in a number and/or foreign country like Bermuda (.bm) Czech Republic (.cz) or Russia (.ru) is a fake website.

What can I do to get rid of them?

The best way to prevent a Phisher is to always know that the website that you are clicking on is a fraud or not.

Worms

What are worms?

The original computer worm was first set free on the Internet by Robert Tappan Morris in 1988. Worms travel from one computer to another but unlike the common virus; it does not need human action. The greatest danger of a worm is that it can replicate itself. It can send thousands upon thousands of copies of itself to other people’s computers. For example the people on your email contact list. They can start conversations by saying “Hey look! I found a picture of this person that looks exactly like you!” then it would send you a file usually ending in an ‘exe’.

How did my computer get infected?

Possibly a person on your email contacts list can start conversations by saying “Hey look! I found a picture of this person that looks exactly like you!” then it would send you a file usually ending in an ‘exe’.

What can I do to get rid of them?

A ‘patch’ is software that patches up the fault that makes your computer defenseless to worms

You can also download internet security or Antivirus programs.

Trojan Horse

What are Trojan Horses?

In today’s computer world, Trojan Horses are defined as “malicious, security-breaking program that is disguised as something benign”. Trojan Horses have the capability to erase your disk, send your security and passport number to the thief, or lets a thief hack your computer. They do not have the capability to duplicate themselves just like worms do. Usually Trojans will create a back door or a trap door to send the information it has gained to the original sender. Some are made to be more annoying than dangerous. They can change your desktop background or add silly icons to your desktop.

How did my computer get infected?

You may have opened or downloaded a file ending in a like “exe”, “vbs”, “com”, “bat”, etc. For example: “dmsetup.exe” or “LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs. These are tricks of the Trojan. Files that you may have opened seem very harmless and important. They can also be sent through email attachments. Trojan horses can literally spread through anything you download, from a free online game to videos.

What can I do to get rid of them?

Fortunately, there are programs that help get rid of Trojan Horses like Clean Re-installation, Anti-Virus Software, or Anti-Trojan Programs. These all cost money but they are worth it. Clean Re-install will back u p your entire hard drive and re-install all your original programs. Anti Virus Software can handle Trojans pretty well most of the time. Anti Trojan Programs are programs that specialized in handling Trojans and not other common viruses. The best way to be sure that you won’t get infected is to never open email attachments sent by an unknown sender.

This is Lottle Mart. [Still in construction. Opening in the beginning of December]

View of … in front of school

This Thursday was International  Day.  Our school chose to focus on only one millennium goal for this year, poverty.  David J. , the representative from Crossroads, he told us his story of how this charity got started and alot of other stuff about poverty that i don’t remember…

Bottom line : poverty is bad and it should be stopped.

After and hour and a half of talking listening and sitting on numb butts, we finally got to activities.

It wasn’t anything that anyone expected. Everybody was thinking running outside in the scorching heat playing ‘fun’ games. But we did something else… something that was suppose to help us understand the lives of people living in poverty who are working day in day out…making paper bags…

We were all divided into ‘families’ of 6, working until our hands burn making paper bags using newspaper a mixture of flour and water as glue. We were suppose to sell the bags to shopkeepers and get the money and pray we make enough to pay for our rent, rice, and whatever else we can afford. To make it worse, we would sometimes catch a shopkeeper on a bad day. They would say “Aww guys! Look how pretty these bags are!” the she would tear it up! David J. would scream into the microphone “C’mon guys make those bags!! Think of your children starving to death! Their fate lies in you hands! Time is of the essence!!” He would repeat the over and over again…its annoying and it just adds up to our ‘fight’ for survival…

After a whole lot of paste, angry faces, and newspaper, it was finally over. The dreaded activity.

We had lunch of rice, potatoes, and carrots…it wasn’t one bit enjoyable.

Next we went into the Gym for yet another presentation. The another activity was waiting for us in the atrium.

We had to carry water from one big bucket to our team’s small bucket. Which ever team fills the bucket up the fastest wins. It sounds easy but we had to do it in other people’s shoes. We didn’t get to choose, we were given two random shoes and were expected to wear them.

Next Activity :

Crossing a “river” with a disability. Being blind, completely immoblie, mute, or deaf. I got the blind one and I had to crawl over the bridge. This was suppose to let us experience the life of a cripple.

Next and Last Activity :

This is my personal favorite. Everybody got this card stuck on to their back. They come in Blue, Pink, Yellow, and Green (I think). On the card, it says a job. You’re not suppose to know what you have but other people can see it. The object is to find out what your job is by asking people hints like “Am i rich?” etc. I got V12 Engine Inventor on a blue card. Turns out Blue cards are all jobs that are at the highest rank in society.

Here were the categories :

Poorest of the poor : Pink

Working Poor : Green

Middle Income : Yellow

Wealthy : Blue

There were a bunch of jobs where i found very funny like “Thai prostitute” or “U.S hobo/bum”

Afterwards the highschool students who are part of the Global Issues Group gave us the statistics of the world. I learned the wealthy people make up about 20% of the world and control 86% of the world’s natural resources and 45% of the world’s population is living under poverty.

As far as i can remember we had another 15 minute assebly in the auditorium.

Then the day was finally over…and so is this blog post.

When someone says family, I imediately think of my parents and little brother waving at me , smiling. Then I see my dogs and cat. Family is a group of people who are related by blood or legally. Families care for each other and help each other. Sometimes they can be a real speed bump. Your parents or sibling often causes you trouble. They usually add up to your issues and problem. Personally, I love my family but sometimes they don’t get that I sometimes want to be alone. And my parents can’t really accept the fact that I’m not 8 anymore

what are you worried/concerned about for this year?

The cafeteria food. I heard , last year, they were going to demolish our cafeteria and I was worried that our sponsor food for this year wouldn’t be as good quality or tastful. I was also worried about the classes. Who I’m going to be with and what are my subjects. I was especially worried about the homerooms. I wanted to have my friends in my homeroom and classes.

This past week, i learned that hydrogen is flammable in Science. We did a couple of labs all relating to pressure, melting points, etc. We debated about Christopher Columbus last week whether if he was a Hero or a Pitiable man in Social Studies. Mr. Scorgie came up to watch our debate. It was a draw in the end.

Cyberbullying is when a person is threatened or insulted through technologies like cell phones, social networks, or text message and much, much more. Today in ICT class, I saw a commercial of a girl who got up and stood in front of an audience putting another girl down. The people witnessing this were stunned, and so was my class while watching that video. I thought the video clear and to the point. Stop cyberbullying.

Patty   (Victim)                                                     Lindsay   (Bully)

“I-Safe America, an organization promoting Web safety, surveyed 1500
students in 4th through 8th grade, and found that 42 percent have been
bullied online. And 53 percent admitted to saying something mean or
hurtful to someone else online.”  - ConnectForKids
